Why Convert PNG to JPG?

PNG files are excellent for graphics, logos, and images that require transparency β€” but they tend to be much larger than necessary for photographs and complex images. A photograph saved as PNG can easily be five to ten times larger than the same image saved as a high-quality JPG. If you're working with photos and file size matters, converting to JPG is the practical choice.

This is especially relevant for web use. Large PNG photos slow down page load times, hurt your Core Web Vitals scores, and ultimately affect your search engine rankings. Converting to JPG β€” or better yet, WebP β€” makes your pages faster and your visitors happier.

What Happens to Transparency When Converting?

JPG does not support transparent backgrounds. Any transparent areas in your PNG will be filled with a solid color when converting to JPG. Our tool includes a background color picker so you can choose exactly what color fills those areas. White is the default, which works well for most documents and print use cases. If your image will appear on a colored background, you can match that color here.

Choosing the Right Quality Setting

The quality slider controls the tradeoff between file size and image sharpness. At 100, the JPG is nearly indistinguishable from the original PNG for photographs, but the file won't be much smaller. At 85, you get a significant size reduction with virtually no visible quality loss for most images. Below 70, you may start to notice compression artifacts β€” blurring, color banding, or blocky patterns in areas of fine detail.

For most web use, a quality setting between 80 and 90 is the sweet spot. For print, stay above 90. For thumbnails and small preview images, you can often go as low as 70 without any noticeable degradation at their displayed size.

PNG to JPG vs PNG to WebP

If your converted images are going on a website, consider whether WebP might be a better destination format than JPG. WebP produces files that are typically 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, and it's now supported by all major browsers. Our WebP converter handles PNG files just as well and gives you even better compression results.
